Oceans & Climate CER Writing Activity

$3.00Price

Help students explain how oceans influence coastal climate through a supported Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning activity. Includes a student reference sheet, climate model data, writing pages, rubric, and teacher answer key.

Can the ocean change a city’s climate? In this science writing activity, students explore why San Francisco generally experiences cooler summers than Sacramento, despite the cities being at nearly the same latitude.

Students evaluate two competing explanations and write a Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning response connecting water’s high heat capacity, ocean heat storage, and the California Current to coastal temperature patterns.

A reference sheet and fictional coastal-versus-inland climate data table give students evidence to analyze. Students must include at least three pieces of scientific evidence and one numerical comparison in their responses.

Included in your download:

• Student scenario and CER writing prompt

• Success criteria and brainstorming space

• Structured CER response page

• Science Evidence Reference Sheet and climate model data

• 20-point grading rubric

• Sample teacher answer key
